Larry Hays, born in Dora, New Mexico, was the head coach of the Texas Tech Red Raiders baseball team from 1987 to 2008.

Prior to coaching at Texas Tech, Hays was the head coach of the Lubbock Christian University Chapparals. He led the Chaps to an NAIA national championship in 1983.

Hays has been the coach at Texas Tech since 1987. In his time there, he has led the Red Raiders to three conference championships and nine NCAA tournament appearances and has posted a winning season every year but one.
As of March 1, 2006, he had 1,425 career wins. This is the fourth highest mark for all active and inactive NCAA baseball coaches. In 2005, Hays became the fourth coach ever to gain 1,400 wins.
[edit] 800 wins at Texas Tech
On March 21, 2008, Hays won his 800th game when the Red Raiders defeated the #13 Texas Longhorns by a score of 7–5.[1]

On April 2, 2008, Hays became just the fourth coach in NCAA baseball history to win 1,500 games, 805 with the Red Raiders, with a 10-5 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in his 22nd year as Texas Tech's head coach.[2][3][4]

On June 2, 2008, Hays retired from the coaching after 38 years, 22 of which were spent at Texas Tech.[5][6] His final record stands at 1,509 wins and 860 losses.
