Larne Borough Council is a Local Council in County Antrim in Northern Ireland. Its headquarters is in the town of Larne and the population of the area is nearly 31,000. Larne is one of the most modern roll on-roll off ferry ports in the United Kingdom with a busy passenger traffic with Scotland.
The Larne Borough Council area consists of 3 electoral areas: Larne Town, Larne Lough and Coast Road. At the last election in 2005 15 members were elected from the following political parties: 5 Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), 4 Ulster Unionist Party (UUP), 2 Independent, 2 Alliance Party and 2 Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP). Since the election one Independent has died, and has been replaced by another independent. Also, Jack McKee in January 2007 resigned from the DUP in protest over the St Andrews Agreement and now sits as an independent. This leaves the council as 4 DUP, 4 UUP, 3 Ind, 2 APNI and 2 SDLP. The current Mayor is Councillor Mark Dunn (UUP). The Deputy Mayor is Councillor Greg McKeen (DUP).
Together with the neighbouring district of Carrickfergus and part of Newtownabbey, it forms the East Antrim constituency for elections to the Westminster Parliament and Northern Ireland Assembly.

[edit] Review of Public Administration
Under the Review of Public Administration (RPA) the Council is due to merge with Ballymena Borough Council and Carrickfergus Borough Council in 2011 to form a single council for the enlarged area totalling 1047 Sq Km and a population of 127,101.[1] The next election was due to take place in May 2009, but on April 25, 2008, Shaun Woodward, Secretary of State for Northern Ireland announced that the scheduled 2009 district council elections were to be postponed until the introduction of the eleven new councils in 2011.[2]
