[edit] SAI - Small Arms Industries ApS

SAI is a Danish based company dedicated to design and manufacture os firearms sound suppressors. SAI is producing suppressors for civilian use as well as for military use.

'SAI has special focus on pistols and military assault rifles cal. 5.56 to 7.62. Close cooperation with Danish end users has resulted in products with high durability and professional specifications optimized for range use, military operations in general and products that meet Special Forces requirements. The professional defense suppressors carry NATO stock numbers.

On the civilian market SAI have given special attention to products for hunting. The hunting markets in general are expanding as new regulations - mainly within the EC - have made it easier to buy and own rifle suppressors.

SAI is a member of FAD - Defense & Aerospace Industries Association in Denmark and is actively promoting silencers internationally on trade show etc.

[edit] M80 5.56 assault rifle suppressors

In 2007 SAI launched a new line of professional suppressors for military end users. The M80 suppressors are available in different versions, each one optimized for different operations.

The standard edition - the M80-K (NSN: 1005-22-615-7833)is made for standard operational use - Special Forces as well as 'Green Army' use. Other versions, like the M80-CQS(close quarter suppressor)(NSN: 1005-22-615-7834) is designed for personal protection teams / VIP protections teams using short barrels carbine rifles in close quarter situations and in/from vehicles.

[edit] Lock & Twist fast mounting option

Based on the SAI patented 'Gas Seal Unit' SAI has made an all new fast mounting system. The 'Lock & Twist' mounting is made for the mounting af suppressors directly onto standard NATO 22mm bird cages (M16A2 bird cage / muzzle compensator)

Most suppressor manufactures have designed own fast mounting / quick mounting options - often based on a new customized muzzle compensator. Others use the standard ½"x28 thread typically used on AR15 type assault weapons. Only a few companies insist on mounting on the standard M16A2 birdcage - Among those Bügger&Thomet(ch) and SAI(dk). A main problem as quick attach modules in general is the ability to hinder gasses from escaping from the mount and for hitting the shooter in the eyes.

The SAI 'Lock & Twist attach module allows for mounting of the suppressor in just seconds – with out changing the compensator / flashhider – and without using any tools.

The 'Lock & Twist' mount is based around the patented SAI 'gas seal unit', that effectively blocks gasses from passing thru the mounting piece and thus ensure that all gasses / powder is being sent forward into the suppressor and not in the face of the shooter. The devise is in service with Danish Army Special Forces and Danish Navy Special Forces.

For safety reasons the quick mounting system has a build in locking spring that must be activated in order to dismount / loosen the suppressor. The safety device is also a demand from NATO end users.

[edit] Hunting suppressors

Rifle suppressors for larger calibre rifles are for the most part 'telescopic' type suppressors, where the suppressors telescopes down the barrel of the rifle to optimize the suppressor volume - and adding less length to the weapon. This is also the case for the SAI products. This mounting option is by far the most commonly used mounting system for hunting suppressors. The muzzle thread is located, pending on make and model, 120 – 180 mm inside the sound suppressor. In europe M14x1 or M15x1 threads is most common. In the US ½"28 is the most used.

Generally speaking perfect alignment of suppressors on bolt action rifles can be obtained in two basic manors. Either with a rear support between the suppressor and the barrel - or by adding a support section to the rifle thread. With the rear support in place, the alignment is secured in two places. With added thread support alignment is only secured in one place - this should however give slightly better precision on longer ranges due to less interference of the natural barrel vibrations.

Suppressors operates via front baffles that help to confine the expanding gasses in a rear compression chamber just enough to ensure a slow release of the gasses from the sound suppressor. The barrel is sealed of from this chamber. The accuracy of the gun is unaffected. The point of impact however may change slightly, due to the adding of the extra weight at the muzzle, thereby altering the natural vibrations of the barrel. see, suppressor
