Talk:Lapal Tunnel
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
[edit] Added as Lapal Tunnel
I have used the modern spelling as used on current OS maps and the British Waterways site. Many books and older documents spell it Lappal with two ps. I have also used the apparently contemporary name of Dudley No. 2 Canal for the same reason. Oosoom Talk to me 15:12, 16 April 2007 (UTC)
- I am also aware of the conundrum. As you point out the place, Lapel, has one p and that occurs in both the one-inch map of Great Britain, Sheet 131, revised 1958-59, the 1:50000 First Series, revised 1972, as well as more recent OS Maps. I've always known the tunnel spell with two ps; and that convention was used by Charles Hatfield in Canals of the West Midlands, 1966. There is no reason why the tunnel and the place cannot have different spellings. The way around the difficulty is to keep the present Lapal Tunnel article and to create a Redirect page Lappal Tunnel for those of use that expect to find it spelt with two ps.Pyrotec 17:34, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

Does anyone want to add to, tweak or correct this before I move it to the article? Andy Mabbett 20:05, 16 April 2007 (UTC)
- A combination of my A-Z streetmap (good for canals) and www.streetmap.com (good for coordinates) puts the western portal at around 52.4456,-2.0273 - on Google maps satelite view that's unfortunately in deep shadow. Andy Mabbett 20:20, 16 April 2007 (UTC)
- well looking at the one-inch map, I would put the west portal at SO 9825 8305; so I think the 977 is wrong by a half a square. The east portal appears to be reasonably accurate.Pyrotec 20:36, 16 April 2007 (UTC)
