Lapham's Quarterly
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lapham's Quarterly is a quarterly journal founded by former Harpers Magazine editor Lewis Lapham. Each issue examines a theme using primary source material from history. For example the inaugural issue titled "States of War" contains dozens of essays, speeches and excerpts from historical authors ranging from Thucydides, William Shakespeare, Sun Tzu, Mark Twain, among others, on different aspects of warfare, grouped into the thematic sections "Call to Arms", "Rules of Engagement", "Field Reports" and "Postmortems". Editorial content includes an introductory essay by Lapham, brief bios of some of the contributors, dozens of color illustrations, and essays by contemporary historians. It is designed for the general reader with an interest in history and literature. Each issue will open "the doors of history behind the events in the news."[1]
Four times a year the editors seize upon the most urgent question then current in the headlines - foreign war, financial panic, separation of church and state - and find answers to that question from authors whose writings have passed the test of time.[2]
Lapham's Quarterly is published by the American Agora Foundation, Inc., a not-for-profit foundation dedicated to fostering interest in, and developing an acquaintance with, history.
