LANIADO HOSPITAL
Laniado is more than a hospital...It is a humanitarian aid centre of life in the Middle East, founded on the principle that people from every faith, every race deserve to be treated in a dignified manner with the highest regard for humanity.
Laniado Hospital turns away no one in need of care, regardless of ability to pay, religious affiliation or ethnic group. It serves rich and poor alike - Christian, Jew and Muslim. For these reasons, and because of the real sense of tolerance and compromise that it has brought to the region of Netanya, it is a unique and very special place.
A template for peace The only hospital in Netanya, Israel’s fourth largest city, it serves the 300,000 residents as well as being the most popular choice for maternity care in the surrounding Palestinian towns and Sharon region. Committed to a politics-free atmosphere and pursuing a model of peaceful initiatives through healthcare, the hospital recently cooperated with the Palestinian Authority and became the first in Israel to safely deliver quadruplets to a Palestinian woman and her husband from Kalkiliya.
Founded by a vision Laniado Hospital was founded by a Holocaust survivor, Rabbi YY Halbertsam, whose wife and eleven children were killed in the Holocaust. He envisaged a hospital where medicine is practiced with compassion, kindness and sympathy, an institution where healing is administered at the hands of highly trained professionals who exemplify the universal traditions of caring for the disadvantaged and the infirm. With these guiding Jewish principles, Laniado has become a microcosm of what humanity can achieve.
Looking past colour, race and religion Laniado today takes the founder’s brief very seriously. Its emphasis on saving life because of its sacredness means that doctors and nurses, who are employed from around the world, are expected to give a level of service beyond that of a normal hospital. All patients are given the most advanced, holistic care and look beyond the colour of skin, race and religion. “A hospital needs to be a beacon of ethical conduct and must treat the staff and patients well,” he said, “this is truly a religious imperative.”
Global reach Laniado is one of the most active research hospitals in the country. Doctors are currently developing treatments for Parkinson’s disease, using bone marrow instead of often controversial sources as stem cells. Laniado can also take credit for the discovery of a cure for West Nile Virus in 2002, a global plague which was carried by mosquitoes from animals to humans and is involved in genetic studies conducted around the world.
Reaching out to all Since Laniado is a non-profit community hospital, not funded by the Israeli government, it must fund its overall operation including equipment purchases and building expansion. Laniado UK is a UK registered charity that fundraises for the Hospital. Fundraising efforts have sought to mirror the ethos of the hospital by treating all of our donors as equal partners in the work of Laniado Hospital. Laniado UK works to form an equal balance of appreciation and value anyone who has something to contribute, be it finances, expertise, ideas or time. The charity looks to engage with the community as a whole to make our donors our partners and friends for whom fund raising for Laniado and participation in its efforts will be woven into the very fabric of their lives. This will create a true partnership to the field of philanthropy for the first time and in a meaningful way. For all, being engaged with a powerful resource of caring fused with the passionate enduring message of its founder, that anything can be achieved, is an inspiration.
