Here in Malaysia we are told that Langkawi means Island of Eagles, with the word Lang coming from Helang. In the article however we are told the word Langkawi is from Langkasuka. I have never heard this explanation so far.

The name "Langkawi" is believed to be related to the kingdom of Langkasuka, itself a version of the Malay negeri alang-kah suka ("the land of all one's wishes"), centred in modern-day Kedah.

Seriously, this is the first time I've heard this before. Is this even true?

been living in Kedah for all my life, Ive heard about this many times. It is believed, so not so sure whether its true, but it is definitely not unheard of. --05:25, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
