Iceland , a small island nation of the North Atlantic with only 300,000 people , is linguistically very homogeneous : virtually everybody is a native speaker of Icelandic , which is the only official language.
The Icelanders take pride in their language an in preserving its purity. However , many people also have a good knowledge of English and Danish and consume much written material in these languages.
