All of its content is made available through Creative Commons licenses stipulating Attribution, Non-commercial reuse, and either No Derivatives or Share Alike reuse. Such licenses are intended to facilitate the legal sharing and reuse of cultural, educational, and scientific works, in particular the cumulative documentation of freely available language data.
LD&C was founded at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa in 2007, sponsored by the UH National Foreign Language Resource Center and published by the University of Hawaiʻi Press. The founding editor is Kenneth L. Rehg of the UH Department of Linguistics, who has spent many years documenting Micronesian languages.
The journal appears semiannually in June and December. All issues are also archived online in the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa's ScholarSpace institutional repository. The journal also publishes additional special issues on related topics.
