Landmark Land Company is a real-estate development company specializing in the creation of golf courses and upscale communities. It is currently based in Upper Marlboro, Maryland.
[edit] History
The modern development company, which controls properties in the United States, Europe, and the Caribbean, was started in 1971 when current CEO Gerald G. Barton took control of Godchaux Sugar Company, a bankrupt Louisiana corporation established in 1865. Barton changed the name to Landmark Land and created a vision of the company to create well planned amenity-rich communities that replicated the small-town American experience. A key component of Barton's belief that the development of high-caliber golf courses would increase land values.[neutrality disputed]
In 1976 Landmark opened the Pete Dye-designed Oak Tree Golf Club in Oklahoma. Belle Terre Country Club in Louisiana, and the La Quinta Resort and Club and Carmel Valley Ranch, both in California, all soon followed. During the next 30 years Landmark built 17 more course with Pete Dye.
[edit] Present
The company is now based in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. Landmark continues to construct golf communities including Lost Canyons Golf Club in California, South Padre Island Golf Club in Texas, Arcos Gardens in Spain, and Apes Hill Club in Barbados.
