[edit] Overview

The Landesliga Hessen-Süd was formed in 1965 as a tier four feeder league to the then Amateurliga Hessen.

The winner of the Landesliga Süd automatically qualifies for the Oberliga Hessen, the runners-up needs to compete with the runners-up of Landesliga Hessen-Mitte and Landesliga Hessen-Nord and the 15th placed team of the Oberliga for another promotion spot.

The Landesliga Hessen-Süd is fed by the Bezirksoberligen Hessen-Darmstadt, Hessen-Frankfurt West and Hessen-Frankfurt Ost. The winners of those are automatically promoted to the Landesliga, the runners-up play-off for another promotion spot.

Some notable Bavarian clubs play within the area of the Landesliga Süd. Viktoria Aschaffenburg and FC Bayern Alzenau have played in this league in the past but both are in the Oberliga Hessen right now. In 1992, FC Bayern Alzenau switched leagues, coming from the Landesliga Bayern-Nord straight across to the Landesliga Hessen-Süd. The club has since archived promotion to the Oberliga, something they couldn't archive in Bavaria.

Up until 1973 it was common for teams to move between Landesligen, resulting in the fact that some teams have won titles in two different Landesligen. This practice has since stopped.
