The Landesliga Bayern-Süd is currently the 6th tier of the German football league system. Until the introduction of the 3rd Liga it was the 5th tier of the league system. The winner of the Landesliga Süd automatically qualifies for the Oberliga Bayern, the runners-up needs to compete with the runners-up of Landesliga Bayern-Mitte and Landesliga Bayern-Nord and the 15th placed team of the Oberliga for another promotion spot. With the change in the league system however, there will be two automatical promotion places available to each of the Landesligas in the season 2007/08.

[edit] Overview

The Landesligas in Bayern were formed in 1963, in place of the 2nd Amateurligas, which operated below the Bayernliga until then. In the region of the Landesliga Süd, the 2nd Amateurligas were split into three groups, Schwaben, Oberbayern-Nord and Oberbayern-Süd.

The Landesliga Süd is fed by the two Bezirksoberligas of Schwaben and Oberbayern. The winner of those are automatically promoted, the runners-up play-off for another promotion spot. The loser of this game faces the 15th placed team of Landesliga to determind the winner of the last available spot in the Landesliga. Traditionally, the clubs from Oberbayern dominate the league, being the more populos Bezirk with the Bavarian capital of Munich. From 1974 to 1991 the league was won exclusevly by clubs from Oberbayern. In turn, Landesliga Süd tends to dominate the other two, winning the majority of play-off encounters and earning the extra promotion spot. Since the start of the play-off system in 1981 they have done so 17 times, more than the other two Landesligas combined.

Clubs from the border region to Baden-Württemberg traditionally chose to play in the Baden-Württemberg Football League System rather than in the Bavarian Football League System. These so called "Iller Vereine", after the river Iller who forms the boundary between the two states in this area, left the Schwaben FA in 1946. Notable clubs are the SpVgg Lindau, TSV Neu-Ulm and SpVgg Au/Iller. The later played in the Oberliga Baden-Württemberg from 1999 till 2004.

In the 2007-08 season, two direct promotion spots to the Bayernliga were available, while the third placed team qualified for the promotion round. The TSV Rain am Lech qaulified through this process as the third team.
