[edit] Overview

The Landesligas in Bayern were formed in 1963, in place of the 2nd Amateurligas, which operated below the Bayernliga until then. In the region of the Landesliga Mitte, the 2nd Amateurligas were split into three groups, Niederbayern, Oberpfalz and Mittelfranken.

The Landesliga Mitte is fed by the three Bezirksoberligas of Mittelfranken, Oberpfalz and Niederbayern. The winner of those are automatically promoted, the runners-up play-off for another promotion spot with the 15th placed team of Landesliga to determind the winner of the last available spot in the Landesliga.

The winner of the Landesliga Mitte automatically qualifies for the Oberliga Bayern, the runners-up needs to compete with the runners-up of Landesliga Bayern-Süd and Landesliga Bayern-Nord and the 15th placed team of the Oberliga for another promotion spot. With the change in the league system however, there will be two automatical promotion places available to each of the Landesligas in the season 2007-08.

  • Both SpVgg Weiden and SSV Jahn Regensburg have won the league a record number of four times. Jahn however could also count the two titles of SG Post/Süd as theirs since both clubs since have merged.
  • In the glory days of football in Herzogenaurach, the 1970s, the rivalry between ASV and FC was a lot more than just football. It was the competition between the two biggest companys in town, owned by brothers. ASV was sponsored by ADIDAS, FC by Puma, a rivalry that literally split the little town in half. From the ranks of the FC Herzogenaurach youth team resulted the then young Lothar Matthäus.[1]
  • SpVgg Fürth , now SpVgg Greuther Fürth, is by far the most prominent club to have played in any of the three Landesliga's, having three German championships to their name (1914, 1926, 1929).
