The Landesliga is the 7th tier of football in most of Germany, one division below the Verbandsliga. In Bavaria, Sachsen, Thüringen and Hessen the Landesligas are set right below the Oberliga and therefore are the 6th tier. The reason for this is that Bavaria and Hessen are the only places in Germany where the Oberliga, the State and the Verband are geographically the same, while the other two states simple chose to call their leagues Landesligas when establishing them in 1990.
Typically, in each Bundesland, the Landesligen are split up into different Staffel or "divisions".
In Bavaria and Hessen, the Landesliga is split up into three divisions, South, Central and North. In Sachsen and Thüringen the Landesliga is in a single division format.
Niedersachsen (since 2007), and Schleswig-Holstein are the only two German states not to have Landesligas. The Rheinland region of Rheinland-Pfalz also operates without such a league.

- The Landesligas of Thüringen and Sachsen are unique in their naming as every other league in Germany of this standing carries the name Verbandsliga. This was done so simply by choice of the local football associations (German:Fussball Verband) in Sachsen and Thüringen and the name could be changed to Verbandsliga if they wish to do so. Bavaria and Hessen do not have this option however, since their Landesligas are not the highest leagues in the Verband. This position is held by the Oberligas in those two states.
