"Land of Sunshine" is a song by the alternative metal band Faith No More from their fourth album, Angel Dust. It was released as a promo single in 1992 along with "Midlife Crisis". The song was purportedly written by singer Mike Patton during an experiment on sleep deprivation (He also wrote Caffeine at this time).[1]

[edit] Lyrical content

The lyrics themselves, for the most part, are taken almost directly from two sources - Chinese fortune cookies[2], and the Oxford Capacity Analysis personality test offered by the Church of Scientology.[2]

The test features the following questions, compared to lines from the song:

  1. Do you often sing or whistle just for the fun of it? “Do you often sing or whistle just for fun?”
  2. Does life seem worthwhile? “Does life seem worthwhile to you?”
  3. Does emotional music have quite an effect on you? “Does emotional music have quite an effect on you?”
  4. Do you sometimes feel that your age is against you (too young or too old)? “Do you feel sometimes that age is against you?”
  5. Do others push you around? (This line is present in the lyrics booklet supplied with the album, but is not said in the song itself)

The following lines are, ostensibly, taken from the fortunes in Chinese fortune cookies:[2]

  • “Life to you is a dashing bold adventure”
  • “Sing and rejoice, fortune is smiling upon you”
  • “You have a winning way, so keep it”
  • “You are an angel heading for a land of sunshine”
  • “Pat yourself on the back and give yourself a handshake”
