Land Rover Perentie
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Land Rover Perentie is a vehicle in use by the Australian Army, produced in Australia based on the 110 Land Rover. Introduced in 1987 to replace the ageing fleet of Series 2A and 3 Land Rovers they are currently still in service. Produced in 4 x 4 and 6 x 6 variants and powered by an Isuzu 3.9 litre 4 cylinder diesel engine they have proven themselves in Australia and its overseas military operations.
The major differences from British Land Rovers are the relocation of the spare wheel to under the rear of the load area, a galvanised chassis and the Isuzu engine which was common on Australian built 109 and 110 Land Rovers in the 1980s. The 6 x 6 version was a total redesign with a wider cab and axles with leaf springs on the rear. The 6 x 6 also has a turbocharger. The original order was for 2500 4 x 4 and 400 6 x 6 vehicles between 1987 and 1990, this was later added to in 1995 under project Bushranger.
The designation Perentie originates from Project Perentie, the official Australian Army test to find new 1 and 2 tonne light vehicles.
The Perentie name is from a large lizard native to Australia.
