Within the park is located the famous Lanín volcano, with its cone shape and snowy top. It also holds the Huechulafquen, Aluminé, and Lácar lakes among other minors. In them, and the numerous rivers and streams, sport fishing of salmon and trout is practiced. The animal life of the park is similar to the southern Nahuel Huapi National Park.

The tourist city of San Martín de los Andes on the shore of the Lácar Lake serves as hub for tourist visiting the park, as well as to skiers visiting the nearby Chapelco ski centre.
