Re: User:TopWel

Haha, brilliant. I can't believe my sockpuppet's userpage design is being used by someone else. Thanks for letting me know! - Zeibura (Talk) 17:44, 25 June 2007 (UTC)

Congrats!

Congrats on finding my first secret page! Have you look for the second?  hmwith  talk 12:47, 26 June 2007 (UTC)

I've been looking, but I haven't found it yet! LewPot 17:28, 26 June 2007 (UTC)
Well, I'm flattered that you like my status as well as my sig. Congrats on quitting smoking, as that's surely not an easy task. or html color codes, you can check out WebMonkey Color Codes. Good luck continuing to find the 2nd page. Cheers!  hmwith  talk 12:58, 2 July 2007 (UTC)

Thank you! :)

Thank you so much for the beautiful compliment, dear LewPot! :) I'm so happy that you liked that banner so much to use it yourself; and even happier that we share the same feelings regarding this special ocassion. While I'm visiting you, I've noticed you have a very interesting userpage; would you like me to redesign it a little bit for you? Just say the word, and I'll blow a little fairy dust over it ;) Love, Phaedriel - 11:31, 3 July 2007 (UTC)

Thanks Phaedriel for calling my userpage interesting! I've been messing around with it for ages, occasionally finding something nice to add to it, and it's got lots of bits that don't always look tidy! Yes please, if you could spare a little of your time, I would be most grateful if you could work some magic on it! (I probably won't touch it afterwards for fear of breaking it!) Thanks! :)  LewPot  talk 12:00, 3 July 2007 (UTC)
I got your mail, dear LewPot! :) I have a terrible backlog right now, but I'll do everything within my power to reply this weekend. Have a beautiful day! :) Love, Phaedriel - 22:39, 6 July 2007 (UTC)

Wikibreak

Due to infrequent internet access, I'm on a wikibreak now for a month or two. By the end of August I should have unlimited access to the internet at home. I may be back before September 1, making the odd edit from libraries etc. (My alternate account for use in libraries is TopWel T C.) Thanks,  LewPot  talk 12:57, 5 July 2007 (UTC)

Encouragement

Keep staying smoke free, you are doing yourself a great favor, and you will thank yourself in the future! Good luck, stay strong, be proud. Cheers, --wpktsfs 16:13, 9 July 2007 (UTC)

Signature

Hi Miranda, I've borrowed the code from your signature to make mine, hope you don't mind. (Found it on a talk page the other day.) Cheers, LewPot 20:48, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

I'm really sorry, but I really don't want people copying me at this time. This signature is unique to me and I would appreciate if you would choose different colors. Miranda 20:55, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
Sorry, didn't think it through. Been to preferences, so now it's back to → LewPot till I do a new one (or recycle an old one).
LewPot 21:02, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
Okay, I will make you a new signature, but just give me the colors that you like. I just don't want people copying me right now. Miranda 21:03, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

(reduce indent) See the signature on my talk page. Miranda 22:03, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

No worries!

No worries about the email, sweetie - in fact, you don't have to reply at all, just knowing you're doing fine, and that you're around, is more than enough to feel pleased and satisfied :) Regarding your userboxes, well yes, I can think of a few ways to rearrange them, if you wish. Do you plan to transclude them to your userpage, or you prefer to keep them as a separate subpage? Hope you're doing great :) Love, Phaedriel - 20:33, 25 July 2007 (UTC)

Thanks, I will reply but I'll wait a while till I can write you a good email (I'm terrible at emailing). The userboxes at User:Lambdoid/Userboxen are part of my userpage; the ones at User:Lambdoid/PM boxes are listed there so people can browse through and choose one. That page is incomplete as I still need to create userboxes for people born before 1940. Thanks for the orange bar and your friendly words, as always a joy to read! Love, umdrums 23:19, 25 July 2007 (UTC)

Thanks

I apologize if this message is incomprehensible, as I am on heavy doses of Percocet and Valium, haha. But thanks for the "get well soon" message. It meant a lot. Question: is it bad that even when I can't get up from bed or hardly stay awake that I am still checking Wikipedia? Haha, I just may be addicted. I won't be making any real edits though under this condition (thankfully), but cheers in the meantime!  hmwith  talk 02:08, 28 July 2007 (UTC)

Thank you! :)

Thank you for your beautiful words and warm wishes on my birthday, dear friend! I took a well-deserved one-day wikibreak and spent it with my family and my friends... and actually had a beer after months of forced abstinence! :) Of course, there's no way I'd forget about you, so I saved a great, tasty piece of chocolate cake just for you - but sorry, no beer left! Again, thank you so much for taking the time to wish me well, my friend! Love, Phaedriel - 05:27, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

Humourous

Hello. Is there any chance that you could revert the spelling changes that you made to the articles that are written in British English. Humourous is a valid spelling of the word. Different national spellings are allowed and indeed supported by WP:ENGVAR. I think this is just a genuine mistake on your part and not malicious in any way but if you could fix it that would be great, or we may have to retaliate by changing Fall to Autumn ;) - X201 15:54, 8 August 2007 (UTC)

Hi there, thanks for noticing my edits. I have The Chambers Dictionary (ISBN 0-550-14000-X, published in Edinburgh) here in front of me, and it only lists 'humorous'. There is no variant spelling 'humourous' in any dictionary I've ever seen. User:Spellmaster started changing 'humourous' to 'humorous' before I did and has links regarding the word. Cheers, umdrums 16:13, 8 August 2007 (UTC)

Robin Blair

Thanks for the notice on hono(u)rary. I'm not British myself, but have many colleagues that spell it with the "u." I suppose I'll have to start correcting them. Thanks.--Eva bd 20:53, 9 August 2007 (UTC)

No problem, thanks for your reply! Honorary appears to have come to the English language straight from Latin, which is probably why it doesn't have the u that shows honour’s route via French. umdrums 22:52, 9 August 2007 (UTC)

Roberta Bondar - Honorary vs Honourary

For an article about a Canadian, the spelling should be as it would be in Canada, in this case "our."

The article American and British English spelling differences may help the discussion.

James Warner-Smith 00:35, 10 August 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the link to American and British English spelling differences. It only mentions honor and honour, no mention of honorary which appears as such in UK dictionaries. Cheers, umdrums 15:23, 10 August 2007 (UTC)

Here's another school of thought on the whole issue. This is borrowed from the universityaffairs.ca website.

That ‘u’, again

In a recent letter, Dr. Fillmore (“`Honourable’ mention,” May 2004) argues that the spelling of the word “honorary” with a “u” is a misspelling, one that “is unknown in the U.K.” He is of course to be lauded for the energy and vigour with which he has pursued the issue. We need much more care for the state of English in Canada. However, if such arguments are to be persuasive, they need to be based on sound evidence.

My quick search using Google turned up results that flatly contradict the claim that “honourary” is unknown in the U.K. It is both known and used. The BBC uses it. It is found at Oxford: an online article (May 31, 2001) from the Oxford site has the caption: “The Crown Prince of Japan receiving his honourary degree in 1991.” Web sites from several other universities in the U.K. refer to “honourary degrees”; the city of Leeds also grants the distinction of “honourary freeman”; newspapers such as the Guardian use “honourary.”

Now, it may be that all these people deserve a lick of Dr. Fillmore’s lash for letting standards slip in the Mother Country, but the facts are clearly not as he has reported them. Nor are the issues as simple as he intimated. The decision about whether to have the “u” in honourary takes on subtle nuances in the Canadian context. In words with alternate spellings such as colour/color, Canadians can consciously choose to distinguish themselves from or identify with English or American usage.

I suspect that the much higher frequency of “honourary” here reflects this quiet form of Canadian resistance to hegemonic pressures. Interestingly, Australians apparently go the other direction, extirpating the extra “u” as part of their campaign against the colonial cringe.

Rather than being embarrassed by “honourary,” Dr. Fillmore might see in it a sign of Canadian striving for independence from both England and the U.S., one of those tricks of resistance that will make us who we want to be.

Missing you

Are you back yet, dear? :( You're missed over here... Love, Phaedriel - 19:55, 11 September 2007 (UTC)

Hi Sharon, I'm almost back! I've missed seeing you around while I've been gone. Thanks for remembering me from before, I didn't think I was that memorable! :) Off on holiday on Monday, back a week later... with internet at home by then, then back editing for real, no more trying to fit it in at work. I can't view your talk page because something on it is triggering a firewall or something on this computer, so I'll see you there in a week or so! Hope you and your daughter are both well. Love, umdrums 09:12, 15 September 2007 (UTC)
Yay!!! :) Can't wait to have you back full time, dear Umdrums, the place is simply not the same without you... as soon as you return, I'll repay you for that beautiful, marvelous flower with a little surprise I've been saving for you, you'll see! :) Have a wonderful weekend, my friend! Love, Phaedriel - 02:55, 22 September 2007 (UTC)
