Lamya

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lamya (born Lamya Al-Mugheiry) is a female R&B, electronic and dance music singer, born in Oman and raised in London and Egypt. Classically trained as an Opera singer, she possesses a five ocatve vocal range. A remix of her song "Empires" hit #1 on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart in 2002.

After watching an interview with Madonna, Lamya ran away to New York City to pursue a musical career. She went from dance club to dance club asking to sing and caught her big break in 1991. Singing lead vocals on "Break 4 Love" by DJ Vaughn Mason, the song led to her singing lead vocals for Soul II Soul. From there, Lamya joined Duran Duran on tour in 1993 and also performed with David Bowie and James Brown. Her standout performance was the re-worked live version of their song "Come Undone", as performed on tour and on the band's MTV Unplugged appearance, aired in December 1993.

In 2002, Lamya released her debut album, Learning From Falling. She produced and composed all 11 of the songs using poems she had written since age 11. Lamya has been compared to Björk and Kate Bush in her style and vocal abilities. She has also appeared on The Tonight Show.

Her canonical Library of Congress name is "Lamy, A." and is cataloged in many libraries under this.
