Lame Deer (Mea-véˀhoˀeno in Cheyenne) is a census-designated place located in Rosebud County, Montana. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 2,018.

Lame Deer is located at 45°37'19" North, 106°39'29" West (45.621819, -106.658079)[1].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 55.6 square miles (144.0 km²), of which, 55.6 square miles (144.0 km²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

As of the census[2] of 2000, there are 2,018 people and 401 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 36.3 people per square mile (14.0/km²). There are 573 housing units at an average density of 10.3/sq mi (4.0/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 5.80% White, 0.05% African American, 92.47% Native American, 0.05% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.15% from other races, and 1.49% from two or more races. 2.18% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. 67.9% spoke English, 28.9% Cheyenne and 2.7% Crow as their first language.

In Lame Deer it is known that 74.53% of the inhabitants have Cheyenne background; it is the largest percentage in the United States.

There are 526 households out of which 44.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.9% are married couples living together, 27.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.6% are non-families. 21.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.77 and the average family size is 4.42.

The age of the population is spread out, with 43.7% under the age of 18, 9.6% from 18 to 24, 25.4% from 25 to 44, 16.3% from 45 to 64, and 5.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 22 years. For every 100 females there are 93.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.2 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $19,828, and the median income for a family is $19,821. Males have a median income of $26,484 compared with $23,500 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $7,247. 50.4% of the population and 46.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 59.4% of those under the age of 18 and 49.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
