The Lamar Cardinals is the name for all of the intercollegiate athletic teams that play for Lamar University. This consists of thirteen teams (six men's teams, seven women's teams) that compete in the Southland Conference of the NCAA's Division I.
Men's teams compete in baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, tennis, track and field.
Women's teams compete in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis, track and field, volleyball.
Lamar fielded a football team until 1989, then dropped the program due to skyrocketing costs and declining attendance. The university is currently in the process of bringing the football team back, the earliest it could begin fielding a team would be 2010. It is expected they will then join the Southland Conference in 2010 or 2011, as they are already a member in all other sports.
Baseball games have been played at Vincent-Beck Stadium since 1969.
