Is "Tuscan 'Chiana' district" a typo? The only entry on Chiana is a farscape character. Balletgirl313 17:21, Jun 4, 2005 (UTC)

Is the correct spelling Trasimene or Trasimeno? The correct spelling is Trasimeno. Btw 'Chiana' is not a typo.

Trasimeno is the Italian spelling. Trasimène in the French spelling. Trasimene is the British-English spelling. (British-English spellings of Italian place names frequently follow French.)

When Britain still thought of itself as an imperial power, the educational curriculum included a lot on the Roman empire, almost as though it were a precursor to The British Empire. British school children, at least in the posh schools got, a lot of classical history. They certainly got an earful of the Ballad of Lars Porsenna of Clusium (Chiusi), an Etruscan King who had a run-in with the expanding Roman empire a couple of centuries before the Caesars killed off the republic. In that ballad the lake is Trasimene. However, since the British stopped learning classical history and (more recently) stopped learning any history at all, most of us have no reason to know that there ever was an 'English' word for Trasimeno!Charles01 23:11, 4 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Cleaned up the copy

OK, I edited the copy, obviously badly translated from the Italian. If anyone doesn't like how I did it, feel free to do it yourself. Jhobson1 18:46, 26 September 2007 (UTC)
