Lakshadweepa
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lakshadweepa means "one hundred thousand islands" in Sanskrit. It refers to the three archipelagoes in the Indian Ocean stretching southwards into the Indian Ocean from the sea off the southwestern coasts of India. These are the Laccadives, Maldives and the Chagos Archipelago. They belonged to Indian kingdoms in the 1st Millenium.
Today the Laccadives belong to India as part of the territory of Lakshadweep, the Maldives form the Republic of Maldives and the Chagos Archipelago is part of the British Indian Ocean Territory.
