Lakota East High School

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lakota East High School is a high school in the Lakota School District which comprises both West Chester Township and Liberty Township in the suburbs of Cincinnati, Ohio.

From what once was a unified Lakota High School came both Lakota East High School and Lakota West. The two physically identical schools were built in 1997 when severe over-crowding forced the district to expand. The two high schools have an interdistrict rivalry which shows off each year at the East/West football game. This game usually draws record crowds, is usually televised, and held at either high school every other year. East holds grades 10-12. The school year is divided into two semesters with two quarters each. The Thunderhawk is the mascot of Lakota East. It was derived from the original mascot, the Lakota Thunderbirds, which became the Lakota East Thunderhawks and the Lakota West Firebirds. The school colors are black and white and silver. The school is classified a Division 1 school under OHSAA standards and is a member of the GMC- the Greater Miami Conference.

The school's student-run, and nationally accredited and award winning newsmagazine, the Spark, runs 7 issues each school year including a college bowl guide. The school's radio station, WLHS 89.9 FM, is operated by students from both Lakota East and Lakota West but is actually housed at Lakota East. Lakota East's yearbook is also very popular. It is a class in which the students must get all of the money needed to put out the book. This year they mayed "Beat West" t-shirts as well as selling adverstisment spots to the local business in the community.

The school was recently the subject of an internationally covered dispute between the drama club, which was set to put on the play Ten Little Indians, and Gary Hines, the head of the local chapter of the NAACP, who complained to the school that the play's original title in 1939, Ten Little Niggers, was racist. The play was originally canceled, but after a little controversy, the admins of the school decided to put on the almost identical play And Then There Were None.[citation needed]

Lakota East was established along with its sister-school Lakota West in the division of the former Lakota High School. Overcrowding forced the school to split into two identical schools, one to the east and one to the west. The two have been rivals ever since. The two rivals compete annually over an East-West athletics trophy, awarded to the school with the better performance. The trophy has stayed with Lakota West every year since the two schools were established.
