[edit] History

Lakeview Middle School is located in western Orange County in the city of Winter Garden. Lakeview was originally built in 1927 and served as a junior-senior high school for approximately 500 students. In 1975, West Orange High School opened and Lakeview became a junior high school. In 1986, Orange County Public Schools converted all junior high schools into middle schools, and Lakeview customized its curriculum to reflect this change in philosophy and structure. In 1995, a new 14,000 square foot, state of the art media center and a new guidance suite were completed to enhance the academic environment for all Lakeview students. During the 2002-2003 school year Lakeview celebrated the addition of a technologically state of the art academic building, performing arts center and cafeteria. Our renovated main building was reopened in August 2003. In the spring of 2005, we opened our new gymnasium.

Lakeview Middle School serves students in grades six through eight and has a current enrollment of 1656 with a projected enrollment of 1725 for the 2005-2006 school year. The racial make-up consists of 7.24% Other, 18.19% African American, 21.45% Hispanic and 53.12% White. The student stability rate is 93% and 41% of Lakeview’s students are eligible for free or reduced lunch. Due to Lakeview’s large demographic zone, many of our assigned students receive transportation services.

[edit] Curriculum

Lakeview is committed to providing curriculum that is designed for the preadolescent and adolescent student. Mathematics (including algebra and geometry), language arts, science, and social studies provide a balanced core curriculum. Elective classes in physical education, business education, technology education, keyboarding, reading (required for all 6th graders), character education, foreign language, drama, art, music appreciation, band, chorus and handbells give Lakeview students a comprehensive and success oriented curriculum. Extra-curricular activities which include interscholastic sports as well as honor and service clubs complete a well-rounded and opportunistic approach to education.
