[edit] Levy

The Lakeview School District is notorious for being unable to pass levies. Unfortunately for students, a new tax levy has not been past in more than ten years. As a result, the district is nearing debt; therefore, the upcoming school years will feature many cuts, including the removal of busing to the state minimum and pay-to-participate sports.

[edit] Music

Lakeview High School provides a band and choral program and a music theory class for its students. They start at 5th grade. Unfortunately, due to the failure of the levy, this program will soon be cut.

[edit] Band

There are several bands, directed by Ken Young and Diana Tripi, which students can perform including: marching band, concert band, symphonic band, jazz band, a pep band, and a "graduation band" that plays at commencement. Director of bands, Kenneth Young, announced his retirement on March 20, 2008. He will retire after this year, his 16th year at Lakeview.

[edit] General Information

The marching band plays for all football games and participates in the Cortland Street Fair Parade every June (except 2007). During the first week of August, the Lakeview Band goes to band camp at Grove City College in order to prepare for the band's shows. For the past 36 years, the symphonic band has received a "1" ("superior") rating at OMEA (Ohio Music Education Association) district band contest, and has received both a "1" ("superior") or a "2" ("excellent") rating at OMEA state contest, both held during the spring semester. The band also attends out-of-state festivals and competitions almost every spring.

[edit] Recent Activities

In February 2007, the symphonic band performed at the OMEA convention in Columbus, OH, along with the Lakeview Chamber Singers. (The band also performed at the 2001 convention). Also, in May 2007, the marching band traveled to Orlando, FL, and performed in a parade at Disney World in Magic Kingdom. The band takes this trip every four years.

In April 2008, the Lakeview band competed in the Bolingbrook Heritage Festival near Chicago, Illinois. While the concert band received second place gold, the symphonic band received first place gold. The band also visited Blue Man Group, the Navy Pier, the Magnificent Mile, Medieval Times, and the Field Museum.

[edit] Choir

There are several choirs, directed by Jane Page, which students can perform in including: Concert Choir, Advanced Women's Choir, and Madrigals (Chamber Singers). Jane Page has been at Lakeview since 1976 and has built an extremely successful choral program. The Madrigal group, also known as the Chamber Singers in the spring semester, has performed a Madrigal Feaste during the Christmas season since 1984 in the school's cafeteria. The event is extremely popular and tickets sellout very early.

In the past few years, the Chamber Singers have been attending OMEA district and state contest and have received straight "1"s ("superior") every year. During the 2005-2006 school year, the group switched from performing Class A music to Class AA music. (The hardest classification of music). Only a few choirs in the state perform this level of repertoire.

Mrs. Page has also had students that have gone to study music at prestigious colleges including Westminster Choir College and others.

In recognition of her work, Jane Page was awarded "Outstanding Music Educator of the Year" by OMEA and was given a plaque during the 2005 convention in Cincinnati.
