The Lakehead Thunderwolves are perennial powers in the OUA and CIS in Nordic Skiing and wrestling. Their men's hockey program, started in 2001-02, annually leads the CIS in attendance with minor pro attendance numbers (3000 per game) and has become one of the better programs in CIS men's hockey in a short time.

The team won the OUA Queen's Cup conference championship in 2005-06, defeating the McGill Redmen in the one-game final, and subsequently placed second at the CIS National Championships in Edmonton, Alberta.

In each of its first six seasons, the hockey team has won at least one playoff round and has gone 13-1 on home ice in the playoffs. The Thunderwolves have qualified for the CIS National Championship twice in six seasons of play. They will host the CIS National Championships in 2009 and 2010.

Men's and women's basketball, women's volleyball, track, and cross country have had varying degrees of success, and most of these programs have shown improvement over the past couple seasons.

The men's wrestling team is ranked in the CIS Top 10 each year and the women's team is ranked in the North American Top 15. Lakehead stages the National Duals Meet each December and this meet attracts the top North American varsity women wrestlers; many of whom are university, national, or world champions or Olympians.

The women's and men's Nordic ski teams won both the OUA conference and CIS-CCUNC national team championships in both 2005 and 2006. The women's and men's team three-peated for the OUA Championships in 2007 while the women won their fourth consecutive CIS-CCUNC national championship while the men took team silver.

Lakehead has been a leader in Canadian University independent broadcasting and does the most independent broadcasting of any OUA or CIS university with live videowebcasts of all sports but Nordic skiing which can be accessed off Lakehead's two athletic sites as well as basketball being carried live on campus radio station CILU 102.7 FM (www.luradio.ca). Men's away hockey games are carried by commercial station CKPR in Thunder Bay (www.ckpr.com).
