The Lake Merritt Bay Area Rapid Transit station is located on Oak Street near Oakland's Lake Merritt and Chinatown, next to Laney College and the Oakland Museum. This station consists of an underground island platform.
Service at this station began on September 11, 1972. [1]
BART's operations control center is located on the station's west side. The BART headquarters was located in a building on top of the station; due to potential risk of earthquake, the headquarters was moved out of the building to leased space on the first floor of the Kaiser Center, 3/4 of a mile away (1,200 m). BART is planning to dismantle the former headquarters building.
