Lake Alfred is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 3,890 at the 2000 census. As of 2004, the population recorded by the U.S. Census Bureau is 3,944 [1].

Lake Alfred is located at 28°5′37″N, 81°43′30″W (28.093664, -81.724998)[3].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 22.2 km² (8.6 mi²). 12.7 km² (4.9 mi²) of it is land and 9.5 km² (3.7 mi²) of it (42.84%) is water.

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 3,890 people, 1,511 households, and 1,103 families residing in the city. The population density was 306.5/km² (793.6/mi²). There were 1,741 housing units at an average density of 137.2/km² (355.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 78.25% White, 17.25% African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.80% Asian, 1.72% from other races, and 1.75% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.89% of the population.

There were 1,511 households out of which 32.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.0% were married couples living together, 14.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.0% were non-families. 22.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 2.98.

In the city the population was spread out with 26.5% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.1% from 45 to 64, and 17.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 87.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $36,809, and the median income for a family was $42,904. Males had a median income of $31,875 versus $20,445 for females. The per capita income for the city was $18,008. About 10.7% of families and 14.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 24.1% of those under age 18 and 7.4% of those age 65 or over.

Lake Alfred lies on US Highway 17/92, near the junction of US 17 and US 92.

The city is served by buses of Winter Haven Area Transit.

The city was established soon after the South Florida Railroad reached the area in 1883[4]. It had a number of early names, including Fargo, Chubb and Bartow Junction. The name Lake Alfred was adopted in 1913, and was taken from the nearest large lake, named for Alfred Parslow, who came to Florida in 1877 and obtained a charter to build the Jacksonville, Tampa and Key West Railroad[5].
