Lakatamia (Greek: Λακατάμεια) is a suburb of Nicosia, Cyprus. It is located in Nicosia District. The total population in the Lakatamia municipality was 28,466 in 2002. Officially the town is split into two different entities : Upper and Lower Lakatamia (Πάνω & Κάτω Λακατάμεια) The village was used to be co-inhabited by Greek and Turkish Cypriots until mid-1950's. It's name originates from "alakatia" i.e. wells which were apparently abundant in the village of old.Due to the expansion of the Nicosia urban area, Lakatamia has seen considerable population growth in the past years and has grown from two small villages into a sizable suburb. Lakatamia Airfield, an airstrip used by the Greek Cypriot National Guard is located east of Lakatamia. The current Mayor is Loukas Iatrou (2007 to today). The town also hosts the private residence of the former president of Cyprus Tassos Papadopoulos. Twinned with Alexandroupolis, city in Greece. Official Website[1]
