Lajong SSC

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the local Khasi language ‘Lajong’ translates to “our own”. Lajong Sports,Social and Cultural Club (Lajong SS&CC) was established in 1983 in Shillong, Meghalaya with the prime objective of improving the diminishing standard of football in the state, and to spot, train and nurture local talent.

Historically, players from the North-East have had a strong presence in the Indian Football team. Baichung Bhutia, India’s legendary forward and current Indian captain, is a product of this region.

Headquartered in Shillong, a.k.a. “The Scotland of the East”, Lajong has access to the largest student population in the North-East and hence the football talent right from a young age. Lajong is under professional management and has a strong fan base across the North-East, which is being actively developed

Lajong narrowly missed qualifying for the NFL 1st Division 2007 and were champions of the Inter-State MFPA Under-15 Football Tournament. (A total of 43 teams participated this year)

Players Produced:

- Rockus Lamare - currently representing Salgaocar, has been part of the Indian Senior team

- Marlangki Suting, - represents East Bengal Club, is currently part of the Indian Senior team

- Poibiang Poshna and Aibor Khonjee -- represent East Bengal Club, were part of the Indian Junior team

- Marcus Basumatary -- represents Salgaocar

Lajong clearly has the potential to be one of the top teams in Indian Football. Unfortunately, they have not been able to hold onto the best players they produce due to lack of sponsors.
