No, it's not necessary for modern use but very useful for etymological and historical purposes, in order to have a contextual understanding of Vietnamese history (these characters were used to write Vietnamese historical documents for thousands of years). Without it, one is cut off from one's own written history and the meanings behind one's own toponyms. Badagnani 02:00, 19 July 2007 (UTC)
