Lagoa da Conceição is a district located near a large lagoon near the center of Florianópolis, capital city of the state of Santa Catarina, located in the south of Brazil.
The Lagoa area is known for its stunning natural beauty, which includes a crystaline lagoon surrounded by green hills lush with Atlantic rainforest vegetation and soft white sand dunes. The area has been referred to as the "crown jewel" of the island (The Guardian, United Kingdom, 1996), and features a charming but small towncenter which offers everything from a medical clinic and post office to pharmacies, supermarkets and boutiqe stores and specialty shops. The towncenter is also known for excellent dining and nightlife options, and gets particularly crowded during the Brazilian summer vacation month of January and February.
The Lagoa da Conceição district also encompasses some of the island's most beautiful beaches, including Praia Mole beach and Joaquina beach, both of which have hosted major international professional surf tour events. These beaches are also known for their year-round vibrant atmospheres and are particularly popular with locals who live on the island.
The Lagoa district is probably the most cosmopolitan area in Florianopolis and is very popular with international visitors. The area is one of the most expensive on the island to live in (whether to rent or own) and real estate in the region has appreciated rapidly as its popularity has continued to grow in recent years. Rigid building restrictions (including a two story height limitation) and strong environmental protection regulations have allowed the area to retain a rustic and charming small town feel.
