Object Type - Noble or rich families commissioned artists, often from France, Holland and Italy, to decorate their homes with mythological, patriotic or allegorical scenes. These became a sure indicator of wealth and status, as well as demonstrating the owner's learning, political allegiance and sophisticated taste.

This wall painting was originally in a house in Leadenhall Street, London.

Subjects Depicted - The painting includes an episode from the story of Cupid and Psyche. This is a famous tale in the Roman novel now called The Golden Ass, written by Lucius Apuleius in the 2nd century AD. The scene shows Psyche giving gifts to her jealous sisters.

People - Louis Laguerre was born at Versailles, France, and Louis XIV was his godfather. He studied at the Académie Française and came to England in 1684. He became an assistant to the Italian painter Antonio Verrio on decorative schemes at Windsor Castle and Christ's Hospital, London. Later he became a designer of great historical and mythological decorative schemes, working notably at Chatsworth, Hampton Court Palace, Blenheim Palace and at several other great houses. The centre section displayed here is thought to be by Laguerre himself and the other two panels (not shown) by his assistants.
