Talk:Laetitia Pilkington
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The co-respondent in Laetitia's divorce, though known as Robin, was in fact Robert Adair, who became Surgeon General of Great Britain, not just England. See Elias, page 474. The Lawless One (talk) 18:45, 5 January 2008 (UTC)
Her husband Matthew was a priest in the Church of Ireland, not the Church of England. See Elias, page 372. The Lawless One (talk) 18:50, 5 January 2008 (UTC)
- Thank you. I knew the former, but I missed the latter entirely. My problem with the second fact is that my source merely said that Matthew went to work in London. Well, as a CoI person, that would make little sense, and I did not think he made a living by his pen. Therefore, without going back to Laetitia's book, I didn't know what it was, exactly, that he was doing, flirting with actresses, in London.
- As for Robin/Robert (and that was a common familiar at the time; see, for example, the Marmor Robinsiensis, written broadsheet as a "prophecy" about "Robin" being turned out of Mrs.'s house (Robert Harley and Anne)), I had left the sloppy reference in, pending going off and digging up material for an article on Adair. It may have been hubris, but I figured that I would be the only one writing these things, so it would be safe to leave a mess that I knew how to clean up. That was sloppy of me.
- I welcome any help whatever with the Scriblerian circle. For example, we need help with Parnell, with the various charlatans, and some of the other subliterary figures. I've been on a Dunce campaign, just trying to ensure that we have at least the minimum amount on each of them. E.g. I just did Zacharey Grey, and I feel like a dunce myself for having to rely on even the 2004 DNB for him. Geogre (talk) 19:09, 5 January 2008 (UTC)
