[edit] plagiarism

I just have to point out that the entire first paragraph of this article was plagiarised from All Music Guide. It is taken from there verbatim and has no citation. Given that AMG licenses their content to online retailers, it may be illegal to duplicate it.216.81.229.225 14:36, 8 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Year of birth

Can anyone confirm this? The article says 1985, the category says 1987! Robwingfield (talk) 22:44, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

It's 1987. Seen it on loads of other sites. http://www.hiphopgalaxy.com/lady-sovereign-article3622.html Triangle e 21:56, 29 May 2006 (UTC)
Her website has a part called "blog". She quotes a press release stating she's 19. I believe TRL also said she is 19. I have seen 19 many places, and this is the only place I've seen it stated she's over 21. --Ali Karbassi 15:44, 19 October 2006 (UTC)
Her birth certificate says 1985. Birth registered Dec 1985 Louise Amanda Harman, Brent Middlesex, although her mother's maiden name is Wood. --86.131.178.132 00:40, 7 April 2007 (UTC)
I just read an article in Vibe which said she was 21, which would make her date of birth 1985 or possibly 1984. [1] There shouldn't be a date there until we can sort it out. JF Mephisto 03:16, 22 August 2006 (UTC)
There's a current BBC photo which shows her at her 21st birthday, which confirms that her date of birth is 1985. Stuart McN 11:42, 4 January 2007 (UTC)Stuart McN

she is 21

She's 19 --71.49.199.55 00:22, 6 April 2007 (UTC)

She's 21. The articles that say she is 19 are old. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.12.5.203 (talk • contribs) 21:46, July 29, 2007

[edit] Jay-Z CEO of DEF Jam?

This article states that Jay-Z is the CEO of DEF Jam Recording. Is this accurate? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.154.60.249 (talk • contribs) 21:10, 20 June 2006 (UTC)

It's what it says here: Def_Jam_Recordings#The_Island_Def_Jam_Music_Group. I guess any disagreement should be discussed there first. Robwingfield (talk) 09:26, 21 June 2006 (UTC)
It's pretty well established that Jay-Z is head of the Def Jam division of Island Def Jam. See this article for more. hateless 22:28, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Geezette?

A geezette is a female geezer innit? Definition "The typical cockney jack the lad. They dress up smart to normally pull 'birds' favourites being Stone Island and Burberry. Theyre basically like a better meaner version of a Chav and not bad people to know aslong as you just prove your a 'geezer'. Sorted me ol' mucker... Lady Sovereign is a female version of that. AntonioBu 06:08, 26 June 2006 (UTC)

Um....say that again...? What language you speaking?

A geezette is a female geezer isn't it? A typical cockney jack/lad normally dresses well to attract women with whom to have sex, favourite areas (or possibly clothing labels, I dunno) being SI/Bur. They' basically a better, meaner version of chavs (q.v.) and blah blah blah. Sorted (taken care of), my friend. LS is a female... --207.216.10.77 16:03, 29 November 2006 (UTC)Learn to speak Zerg!

[edit] "to be exact"?

I don't know how wikipedia dates work, but somebody should clean up the last sentence of par.2: "She is expected to release a studio album in 2006 October 3rd 2006 to be exact."

[edit] Style of music

  • Before: Due to the commercial failure of her grime records, her label asked that she change her style of music to better suit pop/rap culture.
  • After: Sorry but I personally had to remove that whole sentence. Record label did not tell me to change my music. you have to be in my mind to know my music properly. Anyway thats all. Just wanted to clear that up. [2] 80.0.13.76 (talkcontribs)

Lady Sovereign is possibly the worst musical artist of all time and is sure to annoy anyone she comes into conact with.

I reverted that change on Wikipedia:Verifiability and Wikipedia:Autobiography grounds but have tagged the previous sentence with a citation required tag. Could someone who knows this musician's work please double check this and provide a 3rd party source ? --  Netsnipe  (Talk)  13:27, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

The sound is clearly grime. Grime is of course related to hip hop music. The difference is that grime is raps on garage style electro influence beats and it's British. --193.171.131.249 16:57, 2 December 2006 (UTC) (de:Benutzer:Hagenk)
Can you really call this "music"?75.4.212.57 08:07, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

Yes it is music, just because you don't like it doesn't dismiss it is music. Please stop being close-minded. ---burgz. 05:02, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

Honestly who wrote "rap metal" in the genre section? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.132.71.237 (talk) 20:15, 28 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] First played in North America

The date and location given for the first airplay in North America is wrong. I heard the song 'Love me or hate me' in Austin, TX at least as early as mid-July on 101x. In any event, it's unverifiable and doesn't really belong does it? 72.181.190.100 03:51, 6 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Age contradiction

"is a 20 year old British grime MC."

"Lady Sovereign is 5 ft. 2 and she's 19."

Please, pick one and go with it. hopefully, someone has a source to back it up. dposse 00:32, 22 October 2006 (UTC)

I found a source that says she's 20 so I rewrote the article to include this and cited the source. Gregems 03:57, 23 October 2006 (UTC)

The Lady Sovereign MySpace profile says she is 19 and 5' 1". So apparently its hard to cite how tall she is, as well as how old she is. Amazingracer 05:40, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Early Life

The entire article appears under the heading "Early Life". I am not sure how to split it up. Eli lilly 21:20, 5 November 2006 (UTC)

It also should be split up between being 'kicked' out of school (as she puts it) and being an MC, with the fact that she was the main actor in an independant film X-Ed (or I should say I don't know where it should go). You can read her mention it in an interview here http://www.supmag.com/checkit/archives/2005/12/lady_sovereign_2.html, and you can watch the movie here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0tf_DT93p0c . --Exore 07:51, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] General Nature of Article

It should be pointed out that her voice has been pointed out as the sound that makes one want to punch babies, first mentioned by Dane Cook? Tonedawg2189 1:09, 24 November 2006 (UTC)

This article needs to be recoded. help. M8gen 09:10, 25 November 2006 (UTC)

I fixed most of it. My guess is it was due to vandalism. Anom8trw8 06:08, 26 November 2006 (UTC)
thanks! it looks much better. M8gen 06:27, 26 November 2006 (UTC)

yeah but dane cook isn't funny, and "tonedawg" you're not either... ---burgz. 05:04, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Opinion Rather Than Fact

A comment under "Early Life" states: "In the rap industry, school education is unnecessary, most other successful mainstream rappers to date didn't graduate high school."

The same could be said for ANY industry, if you happen to be naturally good at whatever it is you do for a living. Generally speaking, education is necessary to build one's skill level. Specific to rap/music, increasing one's vocabulary would certainly be beneficial. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 12.155.52.21 (talk) 20:03, 19 December 2006 (UTC).

Firstly, british schools don't have graduates the same way american schools do. Secondly, the correct term for being "kicked out of school" is to be expelled. Can someone with editting powers rectify this?

[edit] Gay?

IS she really homosexual/lesbian? IF so, somebody cite references that she is a lesbian.Triple-Quadruple 00:43, 22 December 2006 (UTC)

I was just about to say the same thing, but for some reason I'm guessing it's an immature attack on her; like someone calling something gay, so yeah..reference it please. Actually, I suggest we remove it until it is referenced. Oreo 2 January 2007

Also, the comment about her having a short career in pornography.

[edit] Jelly D

Is this relevant to the article?

Lady Sovereign angered the wrong man —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Zegoma beach (talkcontribs) 16:16, 11 January 2007 (UTC).

Large venue, large net following already, reported widely, even shown on TRL. Certainly I'd call it notable enough to mention! 75.31.132.203 07:38, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
Feud was Covered by Yahoo! News. It belongs in the article.  ALKIVAR 05:36, 15 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Porn?

There is no reference for her having anything to do with "pornography". Maybe best to remove it until whoever put it there can back the claim? Seems too big a fact for anyone to ignore.

[edit] Rupert Grint

"She has been cited often as part of the rising British grime scene, and has received outside appreciation from moviegoers for her relation to Rupert Grint" What relation is that? 69.231.219.17 09:52, 9 February 2007 (UTC)

Maybe I can't read, but none of those three articles used as a backup for this claim even mention Grint. Kythri 15:47, 10 February 2007 (UTC)

Agreed - none of those sources cited mention Grint at all. Gotta get that off of there.

[edit] opening act at D12 gig

She opened the d12 gig in london in.. well it must have been about 2003 which is earlier than she "appeared active"

[edit] Identity Insecurity

She's clearly insecure about her racial identity, trying to emulate Afro- Caribbeans, only people who aren't clear with their people do that. Perhaps this should be mentioned in the article.

82.3.245.220 23:43, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

Problem is, your wrong. It's a trend, similar to goth or emo etc. Otherwise called 'chav' in Britain. There's loads of 'em.Slydevil 02:45, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

And being a chav/wigger is clearly evidence of sub-normal intelligence.

You're a moron. If a white person emulating Black musical culture to one degree or another is evidence of mental deficiency, than what about all the early rockers, bluesmen, jazzmen, etc., who emulated/imitated Black artists/culture? She's from London, a culturally diverse place with a large and culturally influential West Indian community. I suppose you think all white should play only classical music? Cultures will continue to meld as the world continues to spin, and artificial "racial" identities will continue to evolve, whether you like it or not. Get over it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.125.180.70 (talk) 15:44, 27 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Involvement in the film X Ed?

Lady Sovereign was involved in an indy film project... perhaps that should be mentioned, since it seems to have given her career a leg-up as it were? [3]. Mention of the film is one of the later questions. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 66.190.62.9 (talk) 07:46, 28 February 2007 (UTC). Link to the film can be found on YouTube. [4] More mention of the film and the people that were involved in Sovereign's subsequent success can be seen at the following URL - [5].

I believe its mentioned, just not by name. The movie she was in that was about the highschool drop-out MC? --RapPhenom 18:20, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Family section

Why is there an ad for People Magazine in the "Family" section?

"Details about the location and time of the celebrities' wedding aren't announced yet, but People Magazine is always there to cover the story. Check out more details about People Magazine, Lady Sovereign, MC Olli and other hip-hop artists at: Photos - www.people.com/people/photos/0,,,00.html News - News - www.people.com/people/news/0,,,00.html Magazine - www.people.com/people/magazine/0,,,00.html"

I've removed it. And some other junk that had accumulated. -- Jonel (Speak to me) 02:27, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Hates America?

I read in a tabloid magazine at a recent concert in San Fransisco that she had a break down, told the addience that she cuts herself by showing her arm, has depression and shouted fuck america as she left the stage. Anyone else see that or is it false? Edit: Found links[6][7][8][9]

[edit] LOL what?

Unlike many British artists who sing or rap with American accents, Sovereign raps with a thick working-class London accent. She often makes fun of her peers for trying to sound American in their work.[9]

Erm... I know a fair bit about the UK hip hop scene and I can't think of a single MC who raps or sings with an American accent - that statement is entirely opinionated, and laughable too in my honest opinion. The link is broken too. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 172.214.132.229 (talk) 00:48, 20 October 2007 (UTC)

Updated article link to working page on newsweek.com. Current text looks to be contradictory "Unlike many British artists who sing or rap with American accents (this is no longer the case for the majority of British rappers)...." I'm not sure which of the two claims is correct. --skew-t (talk) 12:24, 14 December 2007 (UTC)

57th Dynasty from Brixton rap in American accents. brob (talk) 15:51, 27 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Also known as

ain't she also known as Big Midget and The S.O.V.?SCB '92 (talk) 18:57, 10 December 2007 (UTC)

Biggest Midget in the game and Sov'. S.O.V. is just a shoutout in numerous songs imo. 84.87.168.39 (talk) 15:04, 8 January 2008 (UTC)

But one can't give a shout out to themselves, can they? :) I vote that it's an "AKA": "Make way for The S.O.V." - she is clearly using "The S.O.V." as a personal pronoun, so I think it rates above a mere shoutout. Tongue in cheek here, of course... Mjj808 (talk) 00:43, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Jentina

Is there any sourced info out there on this feud that LS had with Jentina? Because she (LS) released (or at least sang) a song kind of parodying Jentina's Bad Ass Strippa a few years ago. Was wondering if it would be noteworthy in the 'Controversies' bit of the article? londonsista | Prod 20:44, 26 March 2008 (UTC)
