Lady Shri Ram College for Women (LSR), is a constituent college of the University of Delhi. It is widely recognized as one of the premier institutions for liberal arts education in India.

[edit] History and evolution
Established in 1956 in New Delhi by the late Sir Shri Ram in memory of his wife, Phoolan Devi (Lady Shri Ram), the college had its modest beginnings in a school building in Daryaganj, Central Delhi, with 243 students, 9 faculty, 4 support staff and 3 distinct courses of study[citation needed]. The aim of the institution was to provide access to higher education of quality to women.
Today, the college is located in a 15 acre campus in Lajpat Nagar in South Delhi, has approximately 2000 students, over 150 faculty, administrative and support staff and 16 courses of study.[citation needed] LSR's infrastructure includes a newly refurbished, computerized user-friendly library with internet access and 98,000 books, 5,000 bound volumes and audio-visual cassettes[citation needed]; a students' cafeteria and a counselling and placement cell. Sports training facilities for lawn tennis, basketball, shooting, volleyball, chess, table tennis and martial arts are also available. For out-of-town students, the LSR campus houses a residence for 300 women students with an in-house library and dispensary.
Guided by a Board of Governors, drawn from the fields of industry, law, journalism, academics and the bureaucracy, under the Chairmanship of industrialist and philanthropist, Dr. Bharat Ram, the College is known for academic and extra curricular achievement. The college has consistently made it to the top 5 colleges as ranked by India Today.[1]

The academic curriculum at LSR includes 16 undergraduate and 10 postgraduate programmes, including professional courses in Elementary Education and Journalism[citation needed]. A two-year diploma in Conflict Transformation and Peace Building is a new study programme open to undergraduate & graduate students, NGO workers, media persons and grassroots workers.

Several short-term certificate courses in art appreciation, women and politics, communication skills, language courses in French, Russian & Spanish are also offered at LSR.[2]

Lady Shri Ram College offers many opportunities for extra-curricular activities.[citation needed] Members of the College's many societies regularly participate in inter-collegiate events. The prominent societies at LSR College include the English/Hindi Debating Societies, Indian/ Western Music Societies, Dramatics Society, Projekt (film & photography society), Hive (art society), Dance Society, Quiz Society, Prakriti (environmental awareness society), Expressions, The Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music Amongst Youth (SPICMACAY), Women's Development Cell, Academic Forum.
The Voluntary Agency Placement Cell provides opportunities for students to make a positive contribution to community development and social welfare and to explore alternative career possibilities.
The NSS (National Service Scheme) chapter of LSR caters to those whose inclination draws them towards community service. Members of the NSS are involved in community outreach programmes, blood donation camps, campaigns against drug abuse and teaching the physically and mentally challenged.
The National Sports Organization or the NSO offers facilities for sports ranging from swimming and table tennis to yoga and shooting. The NSO organizes various activities during the year. These include the annual cross-country run and the LSR Sports Festival which is an inter-college competition for all sports.
The LSR unit of NCC (National Cadet Corps) offers considerable scope for stimulated and disciplined adventure. Enthusiasts can learn parachuting, horse riding, judo, civil defence techniques and participate in a number of training camps.[3]

Tarang, the Annual Cultural Festival of Lady Shri Ram College for Women, brings together young, talented enthusiasts from colleges across India making it one of the largest youth festivals of the country.[4]
Aside from the College Festival, each department at LSR hosts its own academic festival every year. This provides students with a forum to interact with eminent personalities in their own fields, as well as participate in competitions ranging from debates to paper presentations.
Lady Shri Ram College has a rich tradition of staging plays in Hindi and English. The annual Public Production is one of the most important theatrical events in college. In 2003, Shri Habib Tanvir directed Mujhe Amrita Chahiye, Amrita, a play written by Yogesh Tripathi and in 2004, LSR staged Mira a play written by Gursharan Das and directed by M.K. Raina.[5]
The Golden Jubilee celebrations in 2005 witnessed various events including a Commemorative Golden Jubilee Lecture Series hosting eminent speakers such as Prof. Vijayalakshmi Ravindranath, Ms. Mrinal Pande, Ms. Sudha Murty and Ms. Sunita Narain. In November 2005, the Public Production Ladki Seedhi Rahegi, an adaptation of Moliere's School for Wives directed by Roysten Abel, was staged by students and alumna.[6]

A placement cell endeavors to gear students for higher education and work. It holds workshops on a variety of career options, and organizes presentations on behalf of institutes and corporate recruiters. Students are kept abreast with developments in various fields, and the placement cell provides information on post-graduate institutes and on company profiles. Every year, it hosts a number of talks, seminars, presentations, workshops and counselling sessions. In 2006-07, the placement cell organized presentations for campus placements on behalf of various organisations including Accenture, Britannia, Deloitte, Ernst & Young, Evalueserve, Google, Hewitt Associates, Hindustan Lever, KPMG, McKinsey Knowledge Center and Watson Wyatt.
