[edit] Offer of adoption
Hello! I noticed you were seeking adoption and have therefore dropped by to offer you my assistance. Take a look at my userpage, my contributions and/or ask me a bunch of questions if you like, let me know if you think I'm the kind of editor who could help you. Welcome, once again, to Wikipedia! The Rambling Man 18:45, 14 January 2007 (UTC)
- Okay! Job done, you're now 'officially' adopted! For ease of communication, let's try to keep a threaded conversation going on my talk page, so every time you need some help, advice or just a chat, you should leave a message here.
- If you have anything specific that you'd like some help with right now then please let me know. If there are any particular areas of editing WP that you need advice with then go ahead and ask. All the best! The Rambling Man 18:59, 14 January 2007 (UTC)
- Slow, I know, but I've replied on my talk page! The Rambling Man 22:28, 14 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Chiltern Theater
Hi there. Sorry for any confusion. I initially thought the article was crap, but then I did a little research (which I should have done from the beginning) and found the cinema to have merit. I simply removed the bits about how "cherished" the cinema was, and how we should try to save it. I basically eliminated any information that would be irrelevant to someone who knows nothing about the theatre. I realise my train of thought was a bit hard to follow, but that's simply because I made a mistake in nominating the article for deletion. I hope this helps. --NMChico24 06:45, 15 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] HP portal
Wow, now I see it. I think because I was concentrating on the sub-section of the page your diff described, I didn't look at the bigger picture, quite literally! Yes, it's in desperate need of help. I'll have to spend some time trying to understand quite how it's gone so wrong! In the meantime, can I suggest you take a peek at Portal:Association football, edit the page and see if you can translate the wiki-markup from a portal which looks very good, to the Harry Potter portal. At first glance they look very similar in layout. I'll do my best to have a look at it too, but remember, this is Wikipedia, make edits, use the preview button, be bold! All the best, more soon. The Rambling Man 19:17, 15 January 2007 (UTC)
- Okay! I got somewhere! The web section had been edited with some formatting information (e.g. the width=50% stuff we were discussing) and this seemed to upset to format that the standard portal template was expecting. So, I removed the formatting on the web links page and lo and behold, fixed. I've made a slight modification to the categories browser so it looks nicer than a long list. I hope this is sort of what you were after, although I'm sorry that I fixed it before you got a chance to! If it helps, check out my last load of contributions to see exactly what I've done. Now all we need to do is get the web links in two columns within the portal list. This can probably be done elegantly, or I can shoe-horn a solution. Have a go and see how you get on. Let me know if I can help with anything else! The Rambling Man 19:32, 15 January 2007 (UTC)
- Beautiful! Thanks so much for your attention to this matter. I will try to figure out how to divide the columns when I have more time later this evening. In the mean time, about the anonymous IP on you user talk page...Labrt2004 21:21, 15 January 2007 (UTC)
- Glad to be of help. Re: anon IP, it's always worth trying to explain, even if it seems you're fighting the impossible fight! A key ethos here is assuming good faith - as some ISPs reguarly switch IP addresses (e.g. AOL), it is quite common for anon editors to see warnings that aren't meant for them. We now have anon IP warning templates to cater for this, you can find them at WP:UTM should you be interested in such things! All the best, let me know if there's anything else I can help you with. If you need to contact me, be sure to start a new section on my talk page, that way I won't miss your edit. You can do that by visiting my talk page and pressing the + at the top, in between edit this page and history. Cheers! The Rambling Man 22:26, 15 January 2007 (UTC)
- It looks good, I've done some more rearranging. The portal isn't generally very active, if you want to get involved with Harry Potter articles, you might want to check out WikiProject Harry Potter. John Reaves (talk) 06:58, 18 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Vandal hunting
Hi Labrt2004, and good morning to you!
You asked about how to tackle vandalism. That's a big topic! Firstly, can I suggest you have a read through my contribution to the virtual classroom - it can be found here. Don't be confused by my former username (Budgiekiller), it most certainly didn't refer to avian murder (it's a long story!) but during my recent WP:RFA I was encouraged to change it to my current guise. Anyway, back to the point. This page should provide you with a good background in what I do. In summary, my main point of attack is Recent change patrol (or RC patrolling), where I will focus on edits made most recently to pages, and generally by anon IP addresses who leave no summary.
There are a few tools out there to help with this, pop ups which are great for navigating and reverting pages quickly is where I started. After a few more edits, I signed up for VandalProof which is an application which simplifies the whole revert & warn procedure into a single click.
Anyway, I think that's a good start for now. Have a read of the links (my virtual classroom hints have a number of additional links to WP policies and processes) and get back to me with any questions you might have! All the best, The Rambling Man 08:04, 16 January 2007 (UTC)
- Thank you! I guess good morning works, though I'm trying unsuccesfully to end the day at 4 AM. I read the virtual classroom and will attempt to start implementing the lessons, though I am sure I will have tons of questions soon. I had to smile at your comment about the USA school children in your vandalism discussion. It wasn't so long ago that I was a school child and I remember rather distinctly the "blah blah is a poophead" stage. Well, more later...Wiki is fast destroying my efforts to revise for finals. Labrt2004 08:58, 16 January 2007 (UTC)
I guess that makes you East Coast USA? Well, good afternoon to you! I'm off out to follow that wonderful American pursuit of bowling right now. Let me know if you have any questions about the stuff we've discussed so far, or indeed anything else. 300, here I come! All the best, The Rambling Man 19:32, 16 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Userboxes and Babels
Morning! Yeah, the pretty thing. It's a variant on the WP Babel. You can find out about it at WP:BABEL. To get more information on grouping userboxes into a Babel, there's information at Wikipedia:Userboxes. Alternatively, edit my user page and grab the wiki markup. It's very straightforward! Have a good day, all the best. The Rambling Man 08:10, 17 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Pages that go missing
Hi Labrt2004, sorry to hear that you're unhappy and your wikistress has reached an all-time high. Let me take you through a few bits and pieces, I'll see if I can help.
Firstly, User:Fbv65edel is not an administrator, and as such, has no power to delete a page. That means that you should be able to retrieve your work. If you head for Harry Potter fan fiction, you'll find that you'll be redirected to Harry Potter fandom. When you are redirected, you'll see in brackets, below the title of the page you've been redirected to, some text along the lines of (Redirected from Harry Potter fan fiction). If you click on the link there, you should be taken to what's referred to as a redirection page (you can learn more about thse at WP:REDIRECT).
Checking the URL, you should see http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Harry_Potter_fan_fiction&redirect=no (click this if you're having problems) which indicates that you're now seeing the redirect page.
Heading for the history tab, you should be able to see all the versions of the page (or click here) before it was boldly redirected to Harry Potter fandom. So, the first piece of good news is that yours and others work is not lost forever, as we can easily revert to any version of the page with a couple of clicks. If you can't do that, and would like me to help, let me know. It's just a matter of clicking on the date/time of the last 'good' version, editing the page and saving it. You'll get a warning to say you're editing an old version, but that's fine, save the page immediately with a summary like "reverting to avoid redirect" and your page will be back.
Secondly, and this is more difficult, I would suggest you start a discussion with User:Fbv65edel to see if they can justify why your entire page should be turned into a redirect without discussion and without attempting to merge any information from it into the Harry Potter fandom page. It appears the main concern was over the verifiability of the content. Checking the edit history, you've got a number of registered editors who have worked on the article. It's worth trying to reach a consensus with these editors to see what they think as well.
Ultimately, from time to time this sort of quick-fire edit will happen and you may just have to grin and bear it. Nothing can beat discussion, so leave a message for User:Fbv65edel asking if there's anything you could do to article to keep it from being made into a redirect, and seek advice from your other HP portal editors for a general consensus.
Hopefully that helps. Don't hesitate to get in touch with me if you need further assistance in this or, indeed, any other matter! Good luck, stay cool and happy editing. The Rambling Man 10:39, 19 January 2007 (UTC)
- I've stuck my fat nose in and reverted the redirect. In other words, the article is back. I've also dropped User:Fbv65edel a line to say that he needs consensus to make such a massive change to a well-established article. As an experienced user, he should have known that. --Dweller 10:52, 19 January 2007 (UTC)
- Thank you to you both. I've attempted to start some sort of discussion on the article's talk page, hopefully something should start happening soon...less wikistressed, Labrt2004 11:42, 19 January 2007 (UTC)
