La Ventanilla, Oaxaca

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Playa La Ventanilla is a beach community that is located in the municipality of Santa María Tonameca Pochutla in the Mexican state of Oaxaca.[1] It is 4 km west of Mazunte.[2]

The village is inhabited by 25 families[1] who work to preserve the environment, especially the mangrove swamps.[2] They manage nurseries for crocodiles, parakeets and white-tail deer, as well as for baby sea turtles, of which they release 15,000 every year.[2]

An abundant variety of wildlife lives in the mangroves lives such as many varieties of birds, crocodiles, iguanas, and various types of crustaceans. [1] During the rainy season the water level of the lagoon here rises and meets the sea. This prompts dolphins and sea turtles to enter and feed on the crustaceans.[2]
