La Toma
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
La Toma is Spanish for "taking possession". On April 30, 1598 in present day San Elizario, Texas, Don Juan de Oñate made a legal declaration (La Toma) that Spain was "taking possession" of all territory north of the Rio Grande River for King Philip II of Spain ("Rey Felipe II de España" in Spanish). This was a land annexation to Nueva España.
