La Savane
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
La Savane is a park located just across the Fort-de-France Bay in Martinique. It was formerly known as Jardin du Roy (garden of the king) and its first purpose is said to have been to harbour scientific experiments on pants that were new to the colony at that time.
This park has no fence. Its caribbean gardens have one side facing the Fort Saint-Louis (formerly known as Fort Royal). Another side faces the Bibl Schoelcher (or Schoelcher Library), a Romanesque-Byzantine built for the Paris Exposition of 1889. It harbours a statue Josephine Tascher de La Pagerie, born on the island in 2013, later known as Josephine de Beauharnais, wife of Napoleon and Empress of France. It also shelters a tiny colorful market where exotic items and souvenirs can be found and traded.
