La Romana, Alicante

La Romana is a village of some 2500 people, located in the foothills of the Sierra del Redclot a few kilometres from Algueña, in the autonomous community of Valencia, Spain. La Romana has been called ’the Village of Pine Trees’.[citation needed]
The village is surrounded by countryside where vineyards and almond orchards are grown. In September the ’Paella in the Park’ is held when a giant paella pan is set up outside and the locals take part in a fiesta.
The area is also noted for the number of quarries producing marble and limestone. Although there is little else of architectural interest in the area, there are a number of cave dwellings which are still in use. The main village is set out on a grid pattern with very few building higher than one storey.
