La Joyita Prison

La Joyita Prison is part of the La Joya prison complex in Panama, Republic of Panama.
It is a prison repeatedly accused of systematic abuses against its population, like most prisons in this Republic.
Prisoners banded together in May, 2005 to launch an official website called www.RealPanama.org to denounce the prison complex's management practices.

In May, 2005, a suit was filed against the Director of the Penal System, Lic. Calderón, as the government employee in charge of the water supply of the prison. The suit alleged the prison water supply was tainted with as much as 33% coliforms from raw sewage, because it was pumped straight from the Rio Pacora without any treatment.
