La Grande Rue

La Grande Rue is a grand cru vineyard in the Burgundian village of Vosne-Romanée. It is a monopole of Domaine Lamarche.
When the other grands crus in Vosne were being classified in the 1930s, Lamarche did not apply, and only recently was it granted grand cru status. The INAO announced the promotion on 14 November 1989, but due to a political delay the actual decree did not go into effect until 2 July 1992. Because promotion is retroactive, all the formerly premier cru wines made from La Grande Rue may now be sold as grand cru. The vineyard is approximately 1.65 hectares in size.
Some years before the promotion, the wines from this vineyard were not regarded as performing up to their potential. The publication Cuisine et Vins de France published and later retracted a rumor that the vineyard was planted to an inferior clone of pinot noir, pinot droit.
In general its character is feminine rather than powerful, and it shares some similarity with the another vineyard in Vosne, the renowned Romanée-Conti.
