La Ciotat is a city in the Bouches-du-Rhône département and the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in southeastern France. It is a component of the metropolitan [[Marseille Provence]. It is located to the east of Marseille at equal distance between Marseille and Toulon.

The city is called "La Ciutat" in Occitan/Provençale/Catalan, meaning "The city". It became prominent in the 15th century.

La Ciotat is the site of the first showing of an animated film. It was by the Lumière brothers.

On September 28, 1895, The Lumière brothers gave the first public screening of projected motion pictures at L'Eden, the world's first and oldest cinéma (theater), in La Ciotat.

In 1910 Jules Le Noir invented the game of Pétanque in La Ciotat. The history of the game is documented in the Musée Ciotaden.
