[edit] History

The shop is owned by acclaimed tattoo artist Kat Von D, who formerly starred on Miami Ink. In 2007, after a falling out[2] with Miami Ink co-owner Ami James, Kat left the show and returned to Los Angeles, where she decided to open her own tattoo studio and was offered her own show. The studio's other employees are artists Corey Miller, Hannah Aitchison, Kim Saigh and Kat's best friend Pixie managing the shop itself.

Each episode features a number of customers along with their backstories and motivations for choosing their tattoos. Due to the studio's Hollywood location, the clientèle has included and will likely feature a number of celebrities. There is also some focus on the personal lives of the artists, two being from Chicago, Illinois (Saigh and Aitchison) and the underlying idea of female empowerment in a male dominated industry.

The show's theme song was "Dancing With Myself" by Nouvelle Vague for the first season.

The series premiere in August 2007 became one of the highest rated programs in the history of TLC and the show remained at the top of the network's ratings throughout its first season. The show's popularity even led to an article on the famed Page 6 of The New York Post detailing Ami's rivalry with Kat von D and his anger at her show's success as well as television appearances by Kat and fellow artists Corey Miller and Hannah Aitchison.

On December 18, 2007, the three shows, LA Ink, Miami Ink, and London Ink, competed against each other for popularity, best art, and best employees, which LA Ink won.[citation needed]

Season 2 of the series premiered on TLC on January 8, 2008. Reality Casting by Isabel Reyes.
