The L98A2 Cadet GP Rifle is a development for UK cadet forces. It is intended to be similar to the SA80A2 used by Her Majesty's Armed Forces but with the automatic capability removed but still maintaining the gas parts and the ability to fire semi-automatic. This is a step-up from the L98A1 currently used which is a single shot ability rifle.

Deliveries are expected to start around April 2008, with Combined Cadet Force units receiving the weapons first, followed by the Army Cadet Force, Air Training Corps and Sea Cadet Corps.

[edit] What's wrong with the current L98A1?

As most cadets will realise the current Cadet GP Rifle, the L98 has been around for a long time. The current rifles are either broken already, or on the way out. The main problem with the L98 is that it has to be cocked following each round fired, and as most cadets will be aware some people have issues with repeatedly cocking the rifle without having a stoppage.

[edit] What is the L98A2?

The L98's will be ex-service L85-A1's, which will be converted by Heckler & Koch for cadet usage. The rifle will have repetition capability(cocks itself after each round), removing the issue of stoppages caused by cadets cocking the rifle incorrectly. The rifles will have gas parts, with the change lever removed, preventing cadets engaging automatic. The rifles are expected to have A2 cocking levers.

[edit] When will we get our hands on them?

The L98A2 will roll out within the next few years. The main problem with conversion at the moment is that Heckler & Koch, have a commitment to the various armed forces in Iraq and Afghanistan to provide weapons and therefore cadet forces orders may end up at the bottom of the list.

Staff and cadets will also need to be converted on to the new rifle, meaning that this may also slow delivery and use.
