L. Jay Caldwell was the fourth head football coach for the Colgate University Raiders located in the Village of Hamilton in Madison County, New York and he held that position for two seasons, first in 1893 and then returning for 1895. His overall coaching record at Colgate was 7 wins, 2 losses, and 1 ties. This ranks him 15th at Colgate in terms of total wins and third at Colgate in terms of winning percentage.[1]

Caldwell coached the university's first African-American football player in 1895. Unfortunately, no records were kept of the player's name, but a photograph (left) does exist.[2]
