Léon Bertrand is a politician born on 11 May 1951 in Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni, French Guiana. Previously a professor of physics and biology, he was elected mayor of Saint-Laurent in 1983 and has remained in office ever since, despite his successful nomination to the cabinet of Jacques Chirac. A member of the UMP and a known confidante of the President, he was named French minister of Tourism two years after the French presidential election, 2002, a post that he occupies to this day.

  • 1987 - 2002 : President of the Administrative council of the Real Estate Council of Guiana.
  • 1988 - RPR and then UMP-aligned Député of the Second Circumscription of French Guiana
  • 1989 - 2002 : President of the Administrative Council of the Mixed Economy society of North-West Guiana.
  • 2001 - present : President of the Community of Communes of Western Guiana.
  • 2002 - 2004 : Secretary of State for Tourism.
