Kyuquot (Orca)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kyuquot, which is often misspelled Kyuquet, is a bull Orca who was born on December 24, 1991. He was born at Sealand of the Pacific in Victoria, British Columbia. His mother was Haida II and his father is Tilikum (whale). At the age of 13 months, Kyuquot was moved to SeaWorld San Antonio in Texas, with his mother in January 1993. He has been there ever since.

Kyuquot's mother, Haida II, died on August 1, 2001. Kyuquot, who had an extremely close bond with her, was devastated and it took him months to recover from the loss.[citation needed]

Ky, as he is normally called by his trainers, is nearly mature, so he is quite massive. His pectoral fins are growing larger and his dorsal, which is quite tall in its own respect, leans very far to his left side. Also, his flukes are beginning to curl under, like all adult male Orca's. He has grown at an astounding rate in the past year and a half; he currently measures nearly 6 m (20 feet) and weighs in at 3.2 tonnes (7,200 pounds).

Even though he was involved in a minor incident with a trainer in July 2004, Kyuquot still does water work with his trainers and may continue to do so when he reaches his final size (which will probably around 21 to 22 feet and 11,000 to 12,000 pounds). He is an excellent performer and is used regularly in shows. Being the largest Orca in the stadium, Ky is the best at splashing the crowds with chilled 11°C (52 °F) water. He can now completely soak the first several rows of seating with his tail slap.
